T.E.A.L® was invited to table at Bellevue Hospital in New York, NY on May 10th, 2018 as part of their series to provide free Mammogram Screenings to the community, and to raise awareness about breast cancer, other types of cancer, and nutrition.  Associate Elizabeth Cauchois spoke to patients and hospital staff about the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ovarian cancer. It was a great day of engaging Manhattan residents, and connecting with organizations and programs that help citizens throughout New York City. Thank you Bellevue Hospital for including us and allowing us to share valuable information about ovarian cancer!

 

On May 9, 2018, T.E.A.L® Scientific Advisory Board Member Dr. Matthew Lederman led a discussion for healthcare practitioners, local organizations, and the public on how BRCA carriers and patients with Lynch Syndrome and other hereditary cancers can plan and build the families of their dreams. The talk also covered how IVF with Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is utilized to prevent the transmission of cancer predisposition syndromes to offspring. T.E.A.L.® was able to say a few words about its work throughout NYC, and was able to speak to other organizations in NYC and farther afield about their work with cancer patients and genetics. On May 8th, 2018-World Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day, T.E.A.L.® attended the Health & Wellness Fair at Brooklyn College. T.E.A.L.® had a table on the east quad, where students, faculty, and other Brooklyn College staff could stop by and learn more about T.E.A.L.®’s work and the information and resources available at our community center. The fair featured information on healthy eating, disease prevention, health insurance options, and ways to stay active and fit.

On May 3rd, 2018 T.E.A.L.® attended the Pathways to Graduation Health Fair in Manhattan. During the health fair, T.E.A.L.® had an awareness table and used the opportunity to spread information to students and members of the local community about ovarian cancer signs, symptoms, and risk factors in addition to T.E.A.L.®’s upcoming events and volunteer opportunities.

T.E.A.L.® Youth Ambassador Kiara Carrion, and Associate Elizabeth Cauchois attended a health fair at Bronx House on April 29, 2018. T.E.A.L.® provided vital information to the Bronx community about the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ovarian cancer, as well as the different ways to get involved with T.E.A.L.® this spring & summer.

Reporter at WABC-TV’s “Eyewitness News,Stacey Sager was the host, with songs from Opera singer Amanda Beagle, and celebrity guest judges for the T.E.A.L.® Cake Art Competition! 5 members of the T.E.A.L.® community were honored for their contribution to ovarian cancer awareness & education over the past 10 years- Dr. Andrea Silverstein, Dr. Kevin Holcomb, Schern Yung, Dr. Mandy Irvin, and James Peveraro. T.E.A.L.®’s windows have been decorated by an after school program with the Harlem Children’s Zone, located at Salem Community Center. In the words of Teacher Sabrina Gargano (& T.E.A.L.® volunteer!): “At first it was hard to get everyone on board. Earth day was around the corner, T.E.A.L.® reached out for a window display and we have an awesome art program. So I thought, why not put all of those things together and create a masterpiece. Every day students would flood my desk with caps. They began to become excited about the project and it became something they wanted to work on every day. They were doing more than they thought they were. Recycling and giving back to our community is easy. We are rooted in civic engagement and look forward to broadening the minds of my students.”

From the perspective of the students:  “When Ms. Sabrina asked me to bring in bottle caps, I look at her and asked “why?”. She explained to me who T.E.A.L.® was and why it was so important to her. Once I saw her vision I had to help her. I got my friends together and we came up with a plan. I asked my classmates for their bottle caps and motivated others to do the same. Ms. Sabrina stayed consistent and would walk around with a box collection collection box daily. We began recycling to create art, and give back to the community.Salem values community service and I hope to continue to learn about T.E.A.L. and how we can help people in our community.” -11th grade student N.F. Over 1,000 recycled bottle caps were collected, and students even made it a friendly competition of who could bring in the most caps. Over 15 students joined together to sketch what the window would look like, and decide on colors and now the final product is on display at the T.E.A.L.® Community Center! T.E.A.L.® lit the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum Teal during our 10 Years of Amazing Gala, to raise awareness about ovarian cancer for New York City residents. Visible from Eastern Parkway all night long- it was a great opportunity for passerby to learn more about T.E.A.L.® and what the color teal symbolizes. On Saturday, April 14th, 2018, P.S. 164 Caesar Rodney, a public elementary school in Brooklyn, held a health fair in partnership with CAMBA Beacon 164. T.E.A.L.® provided vital information to the Brooklyn community about the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ovarian cancer, as well as the different ways to get involved with T.E.A.L.® this spring & summer.

On Saturday, April 14, 2018, T.E.A.L® staff attended the CAMBA Health Fair at CAMBA Beacon 269. T.E.A.L.® provided vital information to the Brooklyn community about the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ovarian cancer, as well as the different ways to get involved with T.E.A.L.® this spring & summer. The fair also featured a Zumba class, and other healthy activities for attendees before they entered the health fair in the auditorium  Thank you CAMBA for including us in a great event!

On Saturday, April 14, 2018, T.E.A.L® volunteers attended the Eagle Academy Health Fair in Staten Island. T.E.A.L.® provided vital information to the community about the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ovarian cancer, as well as the different ways to get involved with T.E.A.L.® this spring & summer.

On Friday, April 13th, 2018  there was a  T.E.A.L.®  Press Conference at Grand Army Plaza to commemorate T.E.A.L.®’s “10 Years of Amazing” and T.E.A.L.®’s upcoming gala where the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum would be lit teal. News 12 was able to speak to both CEO & Co-Founder Pamela Esposito-Amery, and Majority Leader of NY City Council Laurie Cumbo about the importance of early detection for ovarian cancer, and the many things  that T.E.A.L.®  has accomplished since its founding 10 years ago. On Wednesday, April 11th, 2018, Marketing Associate Paulina Rugart spoke with students about opportunities at T.E.A.L.®, mainly those which involve social media and design. The fair was a great opportunity to meet other companies and nonprofits, as well as to raise awareness about T.E.A.L® as a foundation, the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, and engage the public about our 10th Annual Brooklyn T.E.A.L.® Walk/Run™ coming up in September.

 

T.E.A.L.® attended a job and internship fair at St. Josephs College in Brooklyn, NY on Wednesday, April 11th, 2018. There were over 100 students and community members at the fair, and T.E.A.L.® provided more information about the work that Tell Every Amazing Lady® is doing and how to get involved through internships or volunteering.

 

On March 28th, 2018 T.E.A.L.® attended the Adult Education Health Fair in Manhattan. On March 16th, 2018, T.E.A.L.® participated in an Internship and Job fair at Brooklyn College. T.E.A.L.® was able to connect with students and provide guidance and internship opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in non-profit management and other related fields. As an audience member, Michelle discusses ovarian cancer with Harry Connick Jr. and asks about ways to thank her family for all that they have done for her while she is in recovery. On February 17th, 2018, Lion Pamela Esposito-Amery (CEO of T.E.A.L.®) and Lion Lawrence Esposito (T.E.A.L.® Advisory Board Member) and Lion John Cucarese (Board Secretary of T.E.A.L.®) with Committee T.E.A.L. Caleigh, a Girl Scout in East Rockaway Long Island, has been spreading awareness on behalf of T.E.A.L. ® throughout her school. She describes the initiatives in her own words below:

 

“For my Girl Scout Gold Award I wanted to keep educating people. A topic that many need clarification on is the topic of cancer and how to prevent it and get help.  Since I had at least 6 people close to me who died of cancer since 2009, this was a topic that was important and sensitive to me. Of those included were my father who passed away of colon cancer in 2016 and my girl scout leader who passed of ovarian cancer last year. This project is dedicated to them. So what better way than to educate the youth?  I came up with the idea of presenting slideshows to different grades in my high school.

I attend East Rockaway Jr./Sr/ high school which holds grades 7-12 because of how small our town is. So far I’ve presented to four classes full of 9th, 10th and 12th graders. I intend on presenting a lot more. I contacted T.E.A.L. ® for donations because I knew how dedicated they were. I attended their walk this past  September in Brooklyn and loved it. I attended in honor of my girl scout leader Toni Wilson who died recently of Ovarian cancer. We walked on a team named ‘Toni’s Angels.’

   As another way to spread information about the importance of cancer screening I made pamphlets.  I’m going to leave some at my local library and some at primary care doctors offices. The pamphlets explain why you should get screened for cancer, and what cancers offer early screening such as mammograms, blood tests and colonoscopies. For even more information I will be creating an instagram and blog  possibly on tumblr. The instagram page will include reminders on health related issues and cancer fighting foods.  My blog will be a safe haven for kids who deal with cancer in their family. I know when my father was ill with stage 4 colon cancer, I had no one who understood or really related to my situation besides my family. I want others to know that they are not alone and always have an ear to listen. This blog can also be an outlet for people suffering through chemotherapy.

     I hope this project helps younger generations take charge of their health and listen to the success stories out there.”
