Effects of Menopause

Menopause is a natural biological process that affects all women eventually, but the age at which it occurs varies.

Globally, it’s estimated that around 1.2 billion women will be aged 50 or older by 2030, which is the typical age range when menopause occurs (between 45-55 years old).

Did you also know that most women who have an ovarian cancer diagnosis also go through surgical menopause due to debulking surgery?

Many women diagnosed with ovarian cancer undergo a procedure called “debulking surgery,” which involves removing as much of the tumor as possible. In cases where the ovaries are removed, this can lead to surgical menopause.

Surgical menopause occurs because the removal of the ovaries (oophorectomy) leads to a sudden drop in hormone levels, causing symptoms similar to natural menopause, such as hot flashes, mood changes, vaginal dryness, and sleep disturbances. Women going through this may face additional challenges as they navigate both the physical and emotional impact of cancer treatment and the effects of menopause.

It’s important for women in this situation to have support from healthcare providers, family, and communities to manage the symptoms and adjust to these changes.
