Not only will Life Ice be present at our 10th Annual Brooklyn T.E.A.L.® Walk/Run™, but at our T.E.A.L.® Walks in Savannah, GA, Whitesboro, NY, and Litchfield, CT as well. All registrants for our T.E.A.L.® Walks throughout the country will get a chance to see what Life Ice is all about.

In the words of Life Ice’s founder, Paulette Fox; “In Summer 2010, the idea for LifeIce was borne out of recipes I made to comfort, hydrate and nourish my mother, who had been bravely battling ovarian cancer. Doctors suggested giving her ice chips, as it seems many people respond to the soothing cool crunch of ice. And my mother was no different. But, while the ice was hydrating her, it lacked any nutritional value. So, in the family kitchen that I grew up in, using a variety of healthy ingredients, I began blending and then freezing flavorful batches of “nutritional ice chips.” Using ice as a delivery system for nourishment, my mother ate these nutritional ice chips – and only these nutritional ice chips – for the next few weeks. Defying all odds, she stayed with us beyond the doctors’ expectations. Every one of those extra days was a gift that I never imagined I could give.” With an exciting variety of flavors for patients and nonpatients alike, Life Ice has grown exponentially over the past 8 years. T.E.A.L.®’s Spring Windows by Harlem Children’s Zone

T.E.A.L.®’s windows have been decorated by an after school program with the Harlem Children’s Zone, located at Salem Community Center. In the words of Teacher Sabrina Gargano (& T.E.A.L.® volunteer!): “At first it was hard to get everyone on board. Earth day was around the corner, T.E.A.L.® reached out for a window display and we have an awesome art program. So I thought, why not put all of those things together and create a masterpiece. Every day students would flood my desk with caps. They began to become excited about the project and it became something they wanted to work on every day. They were doing more than they thought they were. Recycling and giving back to our community is easy. We are rooted in civic engagement and look forward to broadening the minds of my students.”

From the perspective of the students:  “When Ms. Sabrina asked me to bring in bottle caps, I look at her and asked “why?”. She explained to me who T.E.A.L.® was and why it was so important to her. Once I saw her vision I had to help her. I got my friends together and we came up with a plan. I asked my classmates for their bottle caps and motivated others to do the same. Ms. Sabrina stayed consistent and would walk around with a box collection collection box daily. We began recycling to create art, and give back to the community.Salem values community service and I hope to continue to learn about T.E.A.L. and how we can help people in our community.” -11th grade student N.F. Over 1,000 recycled bottle caps were collected, and students even made it a friendly competition of who could bring in the most caps. Over 15 students joined together to sketch what the window would look like, and decide on colors and now the final product is on display at the T.E.A.L.® Community Center! Thank you Sabrina, Harlem Children’s Zone, and Salem Community Center for such a beautiful display to welcome spring!

Miss Teen of New York 2018

We would like to congratulate T.E.A.L.®’s Youth Ambassador, Kiara Carrion on her recent title of Miss Teen of New York 2018. She will be representing New York in November. The pageant is scholastically based and recognizes young ladies for their outstanding personal achievements, leadership abilities, and artistic, creative or athletic talents.

Local volunteer Caleigh proves you’re never too young to make a difference!

Caleigh, a Girl Scout in East Rockaway Long Island, has been spreading awareness on behalf of T.E.A.L. ® throughout her school. She describes the initiatives in her own words below:

“For my Girl Scout Gold Award I wanted to keep educating people. A topic that many need clarification on is the topic of cancer and how to prevent it and get help.  Since I had at least 6 people close to me who died of cancer since 2009, this was a topic that was important and sensitive to me. Of those included were my father who passed away of colon cancer in 2016 and my girl scout leader who passed of ovarian cancer last year. This project is dedicated to them. So what better way than to educate the youth?  I came up with the idea of presenting slideshows to different grades in my high school.

I attend East Rockaway Jr./Sr/ high school which holds grades 7-12 because of how small our town is. So far I’ve presented to four classes full of 9th, 10th and 12th graders. I intend on presenting a lot more. I contacted T.E.A.L. ® for donations because I knew how dedicated they were. I attended their walk this past  September in Brooklyn and loved it. I attended in honor of my girl scout leader Toni Wilson who died recently of Ovarian cancer. We walked on a team named ‘Toni’s Angels.’

As another way to spread information about the importance of cancer screening I made pamphlets.  I’m going to leave some at my local library and some at primary care doctors offices. The pamphlets explain why you should get screened for cancer, and what cancers offer early screening such as mammograms, blood tests and colonoscopies. For even more information I will be creating an instagram and blog  possibly on tumblr. The instagram page will include reminders on health related issues and cancer fighting foods.  My blog will be a safe haven for kids who deal with cancer in their family. I know when my father was ill with stage 4 colon cancer, I had no one who understood or really related to my situation besides my family. I want others to know that they are not alone and always have an ear to listen. This blog can also be an outlet for people suffering through chemotherapy.

I hope this project helps younger generations take charge of their health and listen to the success stories out there.”

Thank you Caleigh for being such an amazing  advocate for ovarian cancer in your community and among your peers. Looking to get involved with T.E.A.L. ® but not sure where to start? Contact us at info@tealwalk.org!
