Maimonides Survivors Rock Party

T.E.A.L. celebrated with survivors at the Survivors Rock party, sponsored by Maimonides Hospital on June 4th at the Fort Hamilton Army Base in Brooklyn New York. Cancer survivors enjoyed the beautiful day at the outdoor event which featured a BBQ buffet and performances by the rock band Mazel Tov Cocktail, a band comprised of a talented group of Maimonides doctors and cancer patients. At the event, awards and special recognition were given to outstanding patients and staff members, and Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz made a short speech dedicated to the survivors and the cancer program at Maimonides hospital. T.E.A.L. representatives got a chance to mingle with survivors and show their support while spreading information about Ovarian Cancer, and our upcoming walk in Prospect Park.

Maimonides Medical Center T.E.A.L. Event

Maimonides T.E.A.L. Event

The Maimonides Medical Center partnered with T.E.A.L on May 22nd, in Bay Ridge, to provide an Ovarian Health Symposium for the community. The event included not only a free dinner but also ovarian health information! Samantha Cohen, a gynecologic oncologist, spoke at the event as well. Dr. Cohen is a founding member of the Ovarian Cancer Translational Research Program at Mount Sinai Hospital, which is now a multicenter consortium. She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers like uterine, ovarian, and cervical cancer, and she has received multiple awards for her excellence in medicine. At the event with T.E.A.L she discussed gynecological health issues affecting women of all ages in the community. Further, she spoke about what measures women can take in order to take better care of themselves.

Pamela Esposito-Amery, the executive director and co-founder of T.E.A.L, shared her story about starting the foundation with her sister Louisa. Though Louisa had classic signals of Ovarian Cancer, she was unaware about the disease because she was not familiar with the early warning signs and risk factors. Though Ovarian Cancer is difficult to diagnose, Pamela is passionate about spreading awareness by Telling Every Amazing Lady. Through events like this one and the T.E.A.L walk, taking place on September 7th in Prospect Park, Pamela spreads knowledge about Ovarian Cancer facts.

During the event, Lawrence Esposito accepted a memorial plaque in honor of Louisa, from the Maimonides Medical Center. Lawrence is the father of both Louisa and Pamela.

Dr. Suzanne Trupin is the former Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, and has been featured in national publications including “Harper’s Bazaar”, “Cosmopolitan,” “Glamour,” “Health,” and the Chicago Tribune. She is also the author of “Menopause—Making Peace With Change, the fifth edition.”

1.Why do we still hear that women over the age of 50 are at risk for Ovarian Cancer when we know that women a lot younger are diagnosed at an astounding rate? Not sure what you mean here?Women over 50 are at more risk than women under 50. The highest % of cases is actually diagnosed in women ages 50-59. Diagnoses of the family members, then find out your risk for associated diseases: colon cancers, prostate, breast, melanoma, uterine cancer and then

2.What can a woman do if she is at risk for Ovarian Cancer because of family history? First find out your actual risk, what screening tests you might need and what you can do to reduce your risk.

  1. What should every woman be doing?Get yearly pelvic exams, and converse with your gynecologic health care provider about any abnormal pelvic symptoms.

4.Where would you say most research should improve on? What area of research should be funded most? Improving the way the body fights off disease, the immune system; keep it young and healthy; figuring out how to immure immunity. Working on the inflammation side as well, how to keep inflammation at bay. This has begun to be studied with respect to CVD but not yet to gynecologic disease.

  1. What should all doctors be asking a woman at an annual visit? What concerns you? Do you have a reproductive plan and what is it? What is your overall strategy for good health: exercise, sleep, nutrition? How do you protect yourself from STDs? How is your bladder, your bowel function, and your menstrual cycle?

  1. How do you feel about genetic testing? Who is it appropriate for?Ultimately targeting care appropriately will mean identifying who is at risk for which diseases, and genetic testing is going to be a critical part of that care. I am in favor of using genetic testing that is currently available so that we can use cost effective, and evidence based medicine to achieve optimum health

UW Research Grant Update

Research Grant Update

Earlier this year, T.E.A.L. funded a $20,000 grant to the University of Washington towards Ovarian Cancer screening research and we just got our first grant update!

T.E.A.L.’s grant to Dr. Barbara Goff’s research at UW Medicine is supporting an important new early detection program using something called a triple screen which includes a symptom index and 2 inexpensive tumor markers.  By using a triple screen first, followed by a ultrasound second, the study aims to find a cost-efficient screening method that will keep the false positive rate low enough that this could be a feasible screening test for the general population.  This study, made possible by T.E.A.L., is running smoothly and our physician researchers are enrolling 2-3 patients per week and expect enrollment to last for 2 years.  This is an important study that can create new opportunities in the future for ovarian cancer patients.

T.E.A.L. is ecstatic to hear the progress from Dr. Goff’s team at the University of Washington and hope to see major strides in screening and prevention. T.E.A.L. will be funding more of this program with an additional $20,000 from proceeds raised at the 4th Annual T.E.A.L. Walk.

Learn more about our beneficiaries here.

Ovarian Cancer Survivor’s Course

On July 28th, T.E.A.L. went to the 2012 Ovarian Cancer Survivors Course held by the Foundation for Women’s Cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.  We had a table at the conference and met lots of loyal T.E.A.L. Walkers from the New England area!  It was very informative for all!  Thanks to the Foundation for Women’s Cancer for inviting us to the conference!
